Making Your Watering Count

Story: Making Your Watering Count

Watering the garden doesn’t always mean moisture is reaching your plants’ roots evenly. A quick check beneath the surface can reveal dry pockets and help you make better watering decisions.

  • Gently dig in a few spots around your plants to check how evenly the soil has been moistened. You may find moist soil in one area and dry pockets nearby.
  • Sandy soils can become water repellent when waxy substances from decomposing plant material coat the soil particles, causing water to sit on the surface or move through narrow channels.
  • Applying a soil wetter like Seasol Super Soil Wetter and Conditioner can help water penetrate these dry patches, while the seaweed solution supports root growth and helps plants cope with seasonal stresses.
  • Once the soil is thoroughly moistened, apply a layer of mulch to slow evaporation and help keep moisture around the plant roots. Keep mulch clear of plant stems.
  • Before watering again, check beneath the surface to see if the soil is still moist. Understanding what is happening below the surface helps ensure water gets to the roots where it is needed most.
