Succulents are stunning, low-maintenance survivors that thrive with just a little care and bring effortless beauty to any space.

  • Succulents (including all cacti) are striking, low-maintenance plants that store water in their fleshy leaves and stems, perfect for gardeners who prefer minimal upkeep.
  • “Low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no care” as they still need occasional watering, feeding, and healthy soil to thrive. They don’t thrive on neglect; they simply tolerate tough conditions better than most plants.
  • Their survival superpowers come from evolution: water-storing tissues, waxy coatings that reduce water loss and act like natural sunscreen, and rounded shapes that minimise surface area.
  • Defence mechanisms like spines (seen in cacti) evolved to protect these water-rich plants from thirsty animals in arid environments.
  • Shallow, widespread root systems allow succulents to quickly absorb small amounts of moisture from light rainfalls without wasting energy digging deep.
  • Slow growth is part of their brilliance and it’s an energy-saving strategy that helps them survive harsh climates, making them ideal for dry gardens and collectors who appreciate their resilience and beauty.
