Dog and lawn problems

Episode: Five
Date: 2nd May
Story: Dog and lawn problems
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

You may love your dog, but that doesn?t mean it has the right to destroy your precious and well-cared for lawn. Trevor looks at how to preserve your friendship and your garden.

Tips and Facts

  • All dogs need protein, but it?s the quality of protein in their food that is important, not quantity.
  • Plant proteins are less digestible than animal proteins and over-processing food can also lower digestibility.
  • Feeding the correct level of protein can also help in reducing excess nitrogen in urine, which can cause lawn burn.
  • Small amounts of urine or feces may produce a green or fertilizer effect. Larger amounts however lead to lawn burn or dead patches. Lawn burn via dog urine can be identified by an outer ring of dark green lawn and a dead patch in the middle.
  • Female dogs squat and relieve themselves all at once, so the damage is done in different spots all over the lawn.
  • In contrast, male dogs lift their legs, often to bushes, vines and hedges. This is known as ?marking? their territory. They will then return to the same spots continuously, eventually killing the plant or that part of the hedge.
  • Getting your dog into the routine of walking daily, ideally twice a day, down to the park to go to the toilet is a good idea.

  • Having two grass mats allows for one to be used whilst the other is being washed and aired.
  • The Pet Loo suits all dog sizes and can be used inside or outside.
  • Training your dog to use the Pet Loo is easy; it is just a matter of encouragement and routine.

  • They have been laboratory tested, and are safe for pets.
  • The pH balance of your dog?s urine will not be altered by the use of Dog Rocks.
  • To use: simply remove the rocks from the bag, rinse and place in about 2L of water. Replace rocks every 2months.
