Clever Qld Gardener & Home Garden Waterwise Rebate Scheme
Episode: # 27 1/12/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman
You may remember earlier in the year, the Queensland State Government ran The Green Thumbs competition and the idea was to recognise local gardeners who embraced the waterwise approach to gardening. Well today we are going to meet Yvonne Hanifin she was the winner of the small garden category. Phil takes us through her garden to soak up some of her waterwise wisdom.
Interview with Yvonne Hanifin:
Phil: Yvonne, congratulations on your win, now I see you have used a lot of colourful plants in your garden and they are all hardy. What are some of your favourites?
Yvonne: Bougainvillea’s (Bougainvillea, Hybrid Cultivar), Crucifix Orchids, Grevilleas, succulents give me a lot of colour and less work and use less water, but all the native plants really are excellent.
Phil: So tell us, what have you been doing to keep the garden looking so good when it has been so dry?
Yvonne: Well I use a lot of mulch and we have our own composting and of course we have a rainwater tank which is marvellous. We then have our water garden spikes, we have soft drink bottles in them and that waters deeply down into the soil, we couldn’t do with that really.
Phil: So Yvonne have you heard about the rebate you can get from the state government when you buy waterwise products and plants?
Yvonne: Well I have heard about it Phil, but I don’t really know how you go about getting it?
Phil: Well it is really quite easy, you can just drop into your local garden centre and ask for an application form – then it is just a matter of filling it out, and you can claim up to $50 back when you buy mulch, compost, composting systems, waterwise plants, anything that makes it easy to save water in the garden.
For more great waterwise ideas then make sure you read the latest issue of the Garden Guru newspaper, It is jam packed with gorgeous waterwise plants to discover and clever tips that will get your garden into tip top shape this season.
