What to Do – Garden Makeover

Episode: #27 1/12/07
Presenter: Melissa King

The team are on the home stretch now it is week eight of the transformation from an average backyard to a water saving oasis. With an incredible team like The Garden Company on board plus all of the water saver garden centres from across Victoria pitching in, you can absolutely guarantee that what you will get is a stunning waterwise garden, and the King’s backyard is well on the way.

To cut water use the turf has been reduced to a smaller area, but it is still nice to have somewhere where little Will can crawl around so the keys way to choose a tough waterwise grass from HG turf, the answer is Palmetto Soft Leaf Buffalo (Stenotaphrum secundatum ‘SS100’), it is hard wearing and kid friendly and it contains good winter colour and one established it doesn’t give the weeds much of a chance, plus it requires less water and less mowing.

Planned Irrigation Projects have supplied a smart waterwise system, which guarantees low water use and great looking plants. It is a drip irrigation system, which applies water close to the ground, reducing water lose through evaporation and delivering water directly to the root zone of the plants, all while using water from your very own tank, that is what Melissa calls a water efficient garden.

How the pump works is it draws water from the large underground tank that was put in a few weeks ago, with the solenoid valves, when they are required they will turn on and allocate water to the different areas of the garden.

With a top design like the King’s garden and the attention to detail, the garden will be waterwise and beautiful, and nothing show cases attractive plants and features, quite like the right choice of lighting, so Planned Irrigation have come to the party with a perfect setup.

They are using low voltage light that is being run to all the light fittings, eventually to be buried by the Mulch, there will be lights located in particular areas to focus on the main features of the garden such as the arch way, around the decking and the seat, finally putting one in the pond.

So the structure of the garden is all in, with a large tank buried under the lawn, a grey water system, water efficient water irrigation and lighting and the garden beds are all ready to go, the garden is now really crying out for some plants, so next week Melissa takes the King family for a tour of the water saver garden centres to make their pick of waterwise plants
