Episode: # Waterwise Special 24th November 2007
Presenter: Neville Passmore

The Garden Gurus get to do a ton of flying around the country and it seems like airports are a second home and that’s a bit scary. However with that travel we have seen the drought unfold in every state and perhaps more significantly how plants perform in the dry.

At Tullamarine airport beside one of Melbourne’s busiest freeways is a pretty tough location. This garden bed slopes, it’s a sunny location and gets minimal water and maintenance that is common with many public plantings. This busy spot is home to one of the most remarkable flowering shrubs The Gurus have seen in drought affected Australia called the Flower Carpet rose. These are performing brilliantly all around the country. Not only is it growing brilliantly on little more than rainfall but the flower production is little short of phenomenal.

If you can get down to their level about 70cms you can count the hundreds of buds ready to pop out into a traffic slowing show. Individual plants have been known to produce 3000 blooms in a year.

To get this sort of performance your Flower Carpet roses need to establish a solid root system through soil preparation, regular watering and feeding with a controlled release fertiliser through the first summer. This will ensure that in the second year you’ve got a drought hardy, heat tough flower factory.

You too can you make a dramatic show like this in your garden and the secret is multi-planting. Place 3 plants per square metre and within a year they will be growing into each other then stand back for a ripper show.

So my verdict the Flower Carpet roses have earned their drought tough stripes right here in OZ.
