Plant Nutrition

Presenter: Nigel Ruck
Episode: 23 (6th October 2007)

If you want to get the best out of your plants you’ve got to look after them which means giving them a good diet and keeping them well fed and healthy, particularly during the spring when they’re going ballistic with lots of new growth.

Plants are just like humans in many ways, if they’re strong and healthy; they’re less likely to get sick and far better equipped to deal with the various pests and diseases that are out there just itching to attack a weak specimen. This is similar to the way in which humans are more susceptible to colds and illness if we’re run down or stressed out.

A well balanced diet should include some organic plant food, and a trusted old favourite is Dynamic Lifter. When you’re applying an organic pellet food like this, it’s best to pull back any mulch first, and then sprinkle the required amount onto the soil around the root zone. Once you’ve finished water in straight away, like with most fertilisers and then put the mulch back.

In the growing season, re-apply about every six weeks, except with natives or acid loving plants like azaleas and camellias. With these, use half the amount and apply less frequently.

You can also get similar plant food in liquid form, some with added fish emulsion or seaweed tonic too, which you’re plants will just love. They’re like the “sushi & sashimi” for plants, they come in a concentrate form that you mix with water in a can or sprayer, and apply onto the soil and the foliage.

For us humans it’s 3 square meals a day, but for the plants, you use at 1 or 2 weekly intervals. Be careful not to use if the weather is hotter than 30 degrees.
