Looking after lawns
Presenter: Nigel Ruck
Episode: 22 (22nd September 2007)
Spring is when things really get moving in the garden, plants are putting on big spurts of growth. So are lawns as they respond to the warmer temperatures with a vengeance. To get the most out of your lawn and keep it looking good, you’ve got to take care of it.
Weeds always demand some attention, and if you’ve been a good boy or girl over winter, they shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
If you do have some to get rid of, you can do it by hand, which you might find rather therapeutic, or, perhaps not. If this is the case there are products available to help speed the whole process up, and feed your lawn at the same time.
Spring is one of the most important times of the year to be feeding your lawns. Whether you are using an organic or non-organic fertiliser, be sure to read the instructions first to check suitability and application rates. Always water in well immediately afterwards. Ideally get out there and fertilise when it’s raining, that way you’ll save some water.
If you are like Nigel and love your cricket, you’ll be getting excited about the upcoming season, including the backyard form of the game. However, this sort of activity can cause compaction, and leave bare patches in the lawn, resembling a harsh sub-continent type of wicket. Such areas give certain weeds an unfair advantage.
To alleviate compacted areas, you can use a garden fork to get air holes into the soil and improve drainage, or for larger areas you can hire a spiked roller, or coring machine. Try to stay off bare patches while the lawn grows back. For really bad spots, you may have to lay a section of new turf.
