Great Australians: Showy Natives

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 22 (22nd September 2007)

It’s time to go in to bat for the Aussies, so throw a chop on the Barbie and crack open a tinnie because we are about to pay homage to some of our greatest Australians. These plants are the Garden Gurus and Garden Express picks of the showiest native plants around.

The Long Leaf Wax flower is a show stopper and very tough, tolerating drought, frost, full sun and tough clay soils. For a real treat try ‘Flower Girl’ with deep pink buds that open to starry white flowers.

Lilly Pillies are exotic looking plants with lush glossy green foliage and the newer dwarf forms make sensational hedges or container plants. The Acmena 'Allyn Magic' is lovely with its beautiful coppery new growth. As a bonus it’s not plagued by pimple psyllid like other lily pillies.Lilly Pilly Bush Christmas is another beauty; it has flushes of new orange growth in the winter.

In winter and spring Thryptomene saxifolia steals the show; smothered in small pale pink flowers they will often get flowers at other times of the year too. The best form is 'Payne's Thryptomene ', it is tough plant which will grow in a sunny or shady position.

Correas are a feast for the eyes and the birds. Correa baeuerlenii is a real star with pretty greenish yellow bell shaped flowers. They flower mostly during winter but you will often get spot
flowering throughout the year. The flower looks a bit like a chef’s hat and that’s how it got the common name of Chefs Cap Correa.

Grevillea ‘Superb’ is just as the name suggests with magnificent salmon-coloured flowers. Best of all it flowers for most of the year and the birds love it. It also has beautiful divided foliage which brings a textural quality to the garden.

Acacia ‘River Cascade’ should be grown for its form alone. This aptly named plant has beautiful cascading foliage and looks magnificent growing over a retaining wall or cascading out of tall containers. In spring it has the bonus of pretty lemon flowers.

Banksia ‘Coastal Cushion’ is a petite plant, so it’s perfect for edging a border or dotted cheerfully throughout the garden. It’s also great in pots and containers, on a sunny patio the flowers just keep on coming.

Hardenbergia violacea ‘Happy Wanderer’ is nothing short of eye- catching. This Australian climber or trailing plant is perfect for covering ugly fences, walls, banks and archways. The flowers really steal the show, with vibrant purple blooms over a long period from late autumn to spring.

So there you have it, a look at some fair dinkum, beauty bottler Aussie champs and if you want to grow them in your own garden, The Garden Gurus and Gardening Express have a great deal for you.

For only $24 you can get ten of the best performing Australian natives in 50 mm landscape pots. These plants would normally cost around $48. That is a huge saving of 50%. Order by Monday for free postage.
