Colourful Hanging Baskets

Presenter: Phil Dudman
Episode: 22 (22nd September 2007)

Hanging baskets always look fantastic and with spring in full swing, it’s a good time to be thinking about creating something new. The most important thing to remember is that hanging baskets can dry out really quickly, so here are a few tips to keep them looking great.

Plastic pots are good because the wind can’t pass through and dry up all the roots. If you prefer baskets with the coir lining, make them wind proof by simply lining them with a sheet of heavy plastic. You can recycle an old potting mix bag, just cut around the edge to shape, and then make some holes in the bottom for drainage.

When choosing the potting mix, it is imperative that you use the best possible. A potting mix like Yates Premium Potting Mix is perfect it has an easy to read water saving rating, 12 month slow release fertiliser and added Dynamic Lifter.

When choosing plants a bit of colour never goes astray, but it’s got to be hardy. Ivy geraniums are just perfect. They’re water-wise, they give you months of colour, and the stems tend to cascade nicely over the edge of the basket.

A great way of purchasing colourful hanging basket plants is the new Pohlmans Flowing Field range. They’re available in all sorts of colours and each pack has 4 advanced plants ready to go which is just enough to fill your basket nicely.

Perennial petunias are another great choice in the range and they put on a superb long lasting colour show in baskets. There are Bacopas too, in shades of blue or white. When they get going the colour wraps right around the basket.

Just to hold a little more moisture in the mix, it’s a good idea to use mulch, pebbles or pine barks are both good choices. Mulch will help cut down on evaporation from the surface. Ideally, when you hang your basket try to find a sheltered spot out of afternoon sun and drying wind.

It’s all about stopping that mix from drying out prematurely, and if you follow those water saving tips and choose the right plants you will enjoy colourful hanging baskets like these for months.
