Waterwise Ways
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Episode: 21 (15 September 2007)
There is a product you should be picking up from your local garden centre now that will set your garden up to be water wise right through the summer months.
Ten years ago you would never have thought of buying water saving products, instead you would have been buying things like potting mixes from your garden centre. Now when you visit the garden centre you should be buying things like wetting agents. They are peculiar products but it is amazing what they do for garden plants.
The job that the products do in the garden is critical, they make sure that water soaks evenly through the soil. This does not happen naturally and many garden beds end up with dry pockets without the use of such products. Whenever plants roots grow through the dry pockets it puts your plants under stress, making your plants look sick. When plants look sick it can be common to pour water into the area, but if these dry pockets exist the plants roots can not take up the water anyway.
To avoid dry patches in the soil it is important to use wetting agents. There are two types; one for lawns and one for garden beds. If you have really dry soil which doesn’t seem to wet despite lots of water being added then you should use a liquid wetting agent.
Liquid wetting agents can be applied two ways. One way is by mixing the concentrate in a watering can and applying. The other way is via a hose. The best option is probably the first option as you can add products like Seaweed Booster to the watering can aswell.
The other forms available and the best ones for the lawn are the granular forms of wetting agents. They are best applied in the spring. Yates Waterwise Granular Soil Wetter is really good for lawns ass it encourages the roots to grow deeply which gets rid of thatch which can be a real big problem in couch lawns.
It is also encapsulated in Coco peat which really enriches your soil, it also has seaweed extract , trace elements and a controlled release fertiliser, making it brilliant for lawns.
