What to Do

Episode: # 10 09/06/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman

Phil is at the beautiful Mt Tamborine to show you a wonderful garden open this long weekend as part of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme.

It is called ‘Kananda’ and is quite an established garden but when Mal and Elaine Longton moved there 5 years ago it was terribly overgrown. Now, it is overflowing with lots of sub-tropical and temperate plants that thrive together in these cool mountain conditions.

The views are fabulous but there is a lot of pruning to be done and Phil can’t wait.

The is a weeping mulberry tree (Morus alba ‘Pendula’) that looks fantastic in the spring and summer when it puts on a lot of growth and being deciduous winter offers a good time to give it a tidy up.

You don’t want to take off too much, just cut out any old wood that is dead or broken. Branches that are overcrowded or rubbing can create wounds so they have got to go and anything that is growing upwards from below the graft has to come off too.

Winter is perfect for pruning trees and Phil has a tip for dealing with larger limbs. Rather than chopping something heavy in one go, take it off in smaller sections.

Always make an undercut first then go outwards along the branch to make your top cut. That way, when it breaks you won’t strip the bark, which leaves a nasty wound.

Another thing is don’t leave a stub behind. It will just become a home for pests and diseases. Always prune them back to the trunk and the place to do that is just beyond the swollen point. That is where the tree will naturally callus over and protect the wound.
It is time to be pruning roses too and if you want to know how then check out the latest issue of the Garden Guru Newspaper. There is a step-by-step guide to pruning roses in winter as well as a heap of other things to be doing in your Queensland garden this season. It is available now from your local Mitre 10 and selected garden centres.
