Episode: # 9 02/06/07
Presenter: Melissa King
A beautiful garden can add thousands of dollars to the value of your home and that is just in monetary terms. Lets not forget the role they play in providing a space to relax and entertain or even just a “mind escape”. There are some tired looking gardens around at moment and some just need a bit of maintenance or management to get them back on track, but others are need a serious makeover and not all of us have time to do it ourselves.
The Gurus have just launched our very own Garden Design Management and Maintenance team in Victoria, So Melissa payed the head of the team Jai Cheswick for a chat.
Melissa: Now Jai you are obviously a garden designer, so what is your philosophy?
Jai: I like working with my clients to find something that feels really good for them and there family and there neighbourhood an I also like working with the environment as apposed to against it so that we can create a garden that harmonises with the local community.
They visit a garden that Jai has designed, that works very well in the environment it is in.
Jai: what we have in this garden is the blue leaves of the festuca, succulents and lavender behind the fence that really ties in very with the front and the back of the garden, and very dry tolerant too.
Melissa: The lawn is still looking pretty good?
Jai: Yes, The lawn is about 50-60 mm high which allows the roots of the lawn to get down really deep into the soil and the lawn hasn’t been watered once over summer.
Melissa: There is obviously a difference between garden maintenance and management?
Jai: that is right, garden maintenance is really your mower and blower guy coming around once a week pulling a few weeds and sweeping up the leaves. Garden management is really about making sure the mulch is the right depth making sure your plants are fully looked after in terms of nutrition and watering.
The Gurus have just launched our very own garden design maintenance and management service here in Victoria and we are please to say it is going to be headed up by Jai, so for more information just check out the link on the website.
This week’s waterwise tip.
From a design point of view you can save a lot of water in the garden by grouping plants with similar water requirements together. That way you will ensure they will get just the right amount of water that they need.
