Your Garden Questions Answered

Presenter: Sue McDougall

Sue visits the Dawsons Garden World centre in O’Connor, where Garden Gurus Club Members have come to get their garden questions answered.

A group of children wanted to know how big a red gum tree grows and how long their roots were. A Red Flowering Gum (eucalyptus Hybrid Cultivar ‘Wildfire Red’) gets up to about 6 meters high and about 4 meters wide, the birds just love them when they are in flower so they are good for small areas in the garden.

One Member bought with her a bunch or Rose Hips and wondered what else she could do with them, Sue suggest cutting them and putting them in a vase in side because they will hold their colour for months at the moment and they will look stunning!

Another lady bought in her Vincas that were looking very sad, but there was not much advice that Sue could give as Vincas get a fungal problem in the stem which stops all the sap getting to the top. Once they have wilted there is not much more you can do, so pull them out and put some pansies in.

A man bought in some Iceberg Roses. He bought a large amount of them to put around his garden but one of the shrubs actually began to produce pink tinged roses, which are actually another variety of Iceberg called blushing pink, If it holds its colour then it should be the centre piece for the rest of the garden.

Roses are the world’s most popular plant and they have well and truly earned this reputation with their repeat flowering habits. Thousands of new varieties appear every year, and even though they are almost impossible to kill, they are often the subject of many gardening questions.

Garden Gurus Garden Club members have the opportunity to ask their garden questions at Dawson’s Garden World O’connor and I’m sure there’ll be some rose questions amongst them

Every rose variety has a story and the Peace Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Peace’) is truly unique, it has played a significant role in world peace and was named the day Berlin fell in 1945. It is the worlds most popular selling rose and when you see large classic blooms that are pale lemon edged with pink, it remind us why we grow roses.

Mr Lincoln is the red rose to have, and the perfume is to die for. Granada Rose (rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Granada’) has been around for over 40 years, and it still turns heads when in flower.

For a brilliant cut flower you can’t go past the Tournament of Roses (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Tournament of Roses’) and if you want perfume choose Holtermann’s Gold Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Holtermann’s Gold’). Sue’s favourite choice is the Candy Stripe Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Candy Stripe’) this rose has been so popular because of its really unusual flowers and it is a real show stopper.

If you want more inspiration for your rose garden call into Dawson’s Garden World and pick up their free rose catalogue.
