Top Ten Roses

Presenter: Melissa King

For colour and fragrance, you just can’t beat the Queen of all Flowers – the rose. With so many varieties available, choosing between them is never easy but for Melissa it is still hard beat those tried and true garden favourites.

‘Mister Lincoln’ is a real winner among the crimson-red hybrid tea roses, with its rich velvety blooms that are intensely fragrant. It flowers continuously from spring to autumn on long stems, so it is perfect for the vase.

The aptly named Double delight (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Double Delight’) is an absolute star. It displays large double blooms with carmine red petals and a creamy white centre and shines out as one of the best for perfume. Pick the flowers when they haven’t quite opened, so they hold their contrasting colour.

Among the apricot and orange shades Just Joey (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Just Joey’) is top of the list. The colour of the blooms is somewhere between coppery orange and apricot. The flowers are sweetly scented with a handsome frill to the petals. It forms a slightly smaller bush, and combines well with pastel shades in the flower border.

Charles De Gualle Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Charles De Gaulle’) is another top choice and one of the best mauves around, with fragrant double flowers.

Iceberg (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Iceberg’) has become a household name among rose lovers and deservedly so. It is a floribunda rose so it is vigorous, disease resistant and displays masses of classic white blooms that seem to go on forever.

Shocking Blue (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Shocking Blue’) boasts large fluffy mauve flowers and a sweet perfume. It blooms continuously throughout the warmer months and combines particularly well with deeper purples and soft pink flowering perennials in the flower border.

Friesia (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Friesia’) has the most exquisite ‘citrus-like fragrance and shines out as one of the best yellow roses with compact growth and great disease resistance.

The Papa Meilland Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Papa Meilland’) has the most beautifully, perfect formed dark crimson blooms.

The Peace Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Peace’) isn’t just a superb performer. The blooms have a creamy lemon heart with a fine cerise pink edge and a strong fragrance.

Peter Frankenfeld (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Peter Frankenfeld’) shines out as one of the best dark pink cultivars, with perfectly formed blooms and vigorous, healthy foliage.
