Your Garden Questions Answered
Episode: #5 21/04/07
Presenter: Sue McDougall
Garden Gurus Garden Club members get many benefits and belonging to the club means you can access some of the best local gardening information available, it also means you can become part of special event and offers we run.
Sue visits Dawson’s Garden World in Forrestfield along with 100 garden club members. A part of the membership is that they get their garden questions answered by The Gurus.
One member has a snipping of a Crepe Myrtle branch that was planted in 6 month old chook house compost. The leaves are a little burnt but it is not the end of the world as there is still life in it. It will drop its leaves as it is getting established in the ground but will come up beautifully in the spring.
At the moment there are so many scale insects around and one of the easiest ways to control them is using white oil. Spray it all over the foliage and then do it again in ten days time.
One member brought in some pieces of fruit from a tree at home, a little unsure as to what they were. Cherry Guavas are just gorgeous and taste fantastic on cheese platters. They also make a fantastic shrub as they are bushy, thick and make a really good screen.
Geraldton Wax hate being waterlogged so if they have heavy soil clay underneath they will definitely die, like the sample that another club member brought in for Sue to take a look at. Sue suggests that when you are planting them put gypsum in the bottom of the hole.
Roses are the queens of flowers and when you see them in full flower you just cant help but fall in love with them. They have so much going for them because they are waterwise, have dark glossy green foliage and best of all, perfumed flowers.
With Mothers Day only around the corner Sue thought she would give a little reminder about the great selection of roses Dawson’s Garden Centres have.
For strong perfume you can’t go past Fragrant Cloud Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Fragrant Cloud’). It deserves a spot in any garden.
Pink Kardinal (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Pink Kardinal’) has perfectly formed, long lasting, bright pink flowers and Tournament of Roses (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Tournament of Roses’) is a tall grower with attractive two-tone flowers and subtle copper shades.
Any of these varieties plus many more are available at any of the Dawson’s Garden World stores and don’t forget to pick up their free rose catalogue.
