The lawn really plays a big role in the Aussie back yard. From games of back yard cricket and soccer the Aussie lawn has really seen it all. You know if a lawn looks good, then your gardens will look even better.

Have you ever wondered when watching the football or cricket how they make the different striped patterns in the turf?

It all looks very scientific but the truth is, it all in the mower and really an optical illusion.

When the mower passes over the turf in one direction it flattens the grass and then when the mower returns in the opposite direction in flattens the grass in the other direction. The leave blade then reflects or absorbs light.

So if the leaf is blade is pointing toward you it will appear light and if it is away from you it will appear dark.

You can achieve the effect in your own garden, but you will need the appropriate equipment such as a reel mower, that will flatten the grass while you mow.

To create your master piece it helps if your lawn is fit and healthy and also green. Use a premium slow release lawn food which has all the elements needed. Lush lawn master has an added wetting agent to encourage a deep roots system and will keep feeding your lawn for up to 3 months.

Fertiliser should be applied evenly to prevent uneven growth and colour. It helps if you can wash it in when finished, or wait until it is about to rain.

Of course another common problem in lawns is weeds. Now is the time to be on the look out for Bindii and clover. Bindii develops little brown prickles, and clover has white flowers which the bees love. Control couldn?t be easier with Yates Zero Bindii and Clover.

Just grab yourself a sprayer and mix 30ml in a 10L of water, it is a selective weedicide and will kill most of the common broad leafed weeds. Apply evenly over the weeds and they should be dead in about 4 weeks
