Episode: #13 9/12/06
Presenter: Kim Syrus
Tree roots from gums can take moisture from the lawn and can dry out the ground so much it is hard to rewet. This means any fertilizer is simply being washed past the roots and not actually taken up by the turf.
A simple solution is to use a wetting agent to help the soil regain moisture. Apply either as a concentrate in a watering can or use a click on connection to make it even easier to spread. Now any fertilizer will stay in the soil and green up the lawn beautifully.
Kim is often asked if it is possible to move a rose in when it is in full growth. Well there is no problem, just follow a few simple steps.
Firstly, prune the plant by a half to two thirds. This will make it easy to remove and also compensate for the upcoming root disturbance. If there are leaves left on, spray with Stress Guard to help reduce the shock of moving.
Now start to dig up, try to keep as much of the root system as possible. The rose can either be planted straight into another spot in the garden or into a pot, using a premium grade mix and water crystals. Mix in a seaweed based extract and water in well.
Long deep soaks are really important in the first couple of weeks to stop the plant from drying out. Hold off fertilizing right now, a light feed in a 2 -3 weeks will be fine. Before long, the rose will be back to its blooming best.
Another viewer wants advice on how high he should be cutting his lawn and why. Kim?s advice is to avoid cutting your grass too low. Lifting the mowing height is something we should all be doing right now.
Moving the mower up even notch or 2 will leave your grass a little longer and better for it. The extra length on each blade of grass will shade the lawn roots and help reduce moisture loss making your turf both lush and waterwise.
