Preparing for Summer
Episode: #5 30/09/2006
Presenter: Neville Passmore
It is way too late to plant spring flowering bulbs like daffodils and tulips; but the good news is, this is the perfect time to plant for stunning summer colour.
Summer blooming bulbs and perennials cover a multitude of beauties with which gardeners are not as familiar and this means some intriguing and beautiful surprises
Dahlias are the extroverts of the bulb world. Plant them in a warm sunny position for dazzling displays through summer and autumn.
Then there is the mad reds, oranges and yellows of tropical Cannas, these are flamboyant superstars for summer. Cannas are also capable of growing in or near water.
There are also brilliantly coloured Calla lilies and the ever reliable daylilies Agapanthus are renowned for their bright blue flower spikes through early summer. They make drought tough landscape beauties once established.
For a touch of the unusual, plant out the stunning Jockeys Cap or Tigridias. A personal favourite of Neville?s is the exquisitely perfumed Tuberose.
With all of these beauties in the ground the garden is guaranteed to be a showcase of colour this summer.
