Episode: #3 16/09/2006
Presenter: Paul Hoffman

To keep your kids occupied these school holidays why not take them down to Roma Street Parkland, the worlds largest Sub Tropical Urban Garden. Located in the heart of Brisbane?s CBD it is a fabulous oasis which the young and not so young will love to explore.

To help you explore this magnificent garden you can join a free guided tour of the parkland and learn about its history, the spectacular gardens and art work. Tours run daily leaving from the Hub. If your legs are getting tired jump on the trackless train and explore the gardens in style.

These school holidays, young gardeners can get their hands dirty and join in the creation of a special Children?s Garden along the Albert Street walkway. The children will be working along side the experienced Horticultural team at the Parkland, to learn all the latest tips and techniques to help create an avenue of flowers.

For the first time ever, fishing will be allowed in the Lake at Roma Street Parkland. For a special Catch and Release fishing day just for the kids, 3 years ago the lake was stocked with 1000 fresh water mullet and 500 silver perch, which have now grown to over 40cm long and are very exciting to catch.

For those wanting to learn more about gardening in the Sub Tropics, the Australian Institute of Horticulture is conducting Gardening Classes at the parklands amphitheatre. Classes are conducted twice a month with the next class on attracting birds and butterfly?s to your garden.

Roma Street Parkland is open 24 hrs a day and is home to more than 100 000 shrubs, 1200 mature trees, 1800 unique specimens and 250 different types of palms. They also showcase some of the worlds most endangered and common species.

Spectacle garden, the horticultural show piece, has ever changing themed annual displays. Roma Street is also home to Queensland largest public art collection. Sixteen unique pieces are featured through out the gardens.

If you are looking for a great place for the kids to explore these school holidays, bring a picnic lunch and come on in.
