Need a Bin

Episode: #3 16/09/2006
Presenter: Sue McDougall

Before the warm weather arrives, we need to mulch the garden beds. Mulching is the number one job to do in the garden at the moment. Mulch applied around will save the little moisture that is in the soil from the rain and with one of the driest winters on record the garden needs all the help it can get.

Need a Bin and is the brainchild of Biowise. You can order the Biowise soil improver or Mulch in a skip bin and all it takes is a phone call. The bin is then delivered to your place, tipped out and you have the use of the skip bin for one week.

Once full, the bin is collected and contents disposed of, no mess and no fuss. The 4 by 3 metre bin can be used for all household waste excluding liquids and hazardous waste. There is no better time to have spring clean.

Biowise Mulch is one of the only bulk mulches that carries the Australian standards mark for mulches. This means you are basically getting what you pay for and are reassured it will do what it says it does.

It is a 100% recycled product and when you look at it you will notice it is made of many coarse particles. One of the most important points to remember about mulches is they need to have enough course particles that will let the moisture through to the soil surface, while shielding the soil from the sun and wont reabsorb the water that is meant for garden beds.

Many fine mulches hold onto the water and because we are limiting the amount of water that goes onto the garden, before you know it, fine plants roots are developing into the mulch instead of going deeper into cooler, damp soil. To make a garden more waterwise these fine plants roots need to get deeper.

It is always a great idea to apply a wetting agent around the soil before the mulch goes down. A mulch works most effectively if spread to a thickness of at least 7cm but don?t put any next to the trunk of the plant, because it can cause the trunk to rot and in effect ring bark the plant.

Buying mulch and a Skip bin this way is cheaper than ordering the two separately and getting the bin gives you that little bit of extra inspiration to get the garden into tip top shape for spring and summer. If you don?t have a bulk rubbish pick up in your area planned for many months then Need a Bin might just be the answer.
