Landscaping Essentials
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Episode: 23 (6th October 2007)
If you haven’t got out and visited your local nursery to check out the latest release plants by now you could be missing out on what is the best time of the year. There are some great new plants out like the ‘Velvet’ range of Kangaroo Paws which are a great new range for landscaping.
One essential thing you must do once your pants are in the ground is to set up a watering system. A good system will sustain your plants during the summer months, the spring rains were not enough. A sub surface irrigation system is the best way to go if you want to guarantee that your spring efforts are successful in the long term. A low pressure irrigigation system which delivers water direct to the roots is the future of watering gardens in Australia.
If you are concerned about the cost of such a system, you may be surprised. The systems are actually a very cost effective way to irrigate your garden and can be installed for as little as $5 dollars per square metre.
Another great irrigation innovation is the new compression fittings from Holmans. They are completely different to the old fashioned spear fittings most gardeners are used to. They don’t restrict the flow of water, which means you can use them in all sorts of situations, even in high pressure situations. The grab from the outside so the more pressure the better they hold and there are no leaks.
Putting a sub surface irrigation system together is child’s play. They are very much like Lego sets. One tip is to let the sun heat the pipe before you fit your fittings. It softens the pipe and allows the compression fittings to sit over the top of the pipe easily. The compression fittings do not need clamps, therefore you save money there.
The compression fittings are another clever idea from Holmans who are an Australian company focused on reducing water consumption in gardens through employing clever technology. The compression fittings make setting up an irrigation system so much easier.
On the subject of landscaping ideas the former Backyard Blitzer and new Garden Guru Nigel Ruck has just released a great book. Its call ‘Hands on home landscaping from the Paving Guy’ and it is packed full of brilliant landscaping advise. Join the Garden Gurus Club for chance to win one of ten copies.
