What to Do: The King Family Garden

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 21 (15 September 2007)

Last week the King family discovered there is more than one way to save water around home and garden. It is now time to enlist the help of the experts and work on the backyard.

Expert garden designer Vessel Samakovski from the water saving garden centre Warran Glen offered some advice. Earlier in the week Andy and Michelle had sat down with Vessel and talked of the ways to transform the garden into a water wise paradise.

The Kings are after a low maintenance garden as both Andy and Michelle work which limits their time in the garden. They also want the garden to look good, be low maintenance and were concerned with the amount of water their large family used in the home. They were hopeful that they could reduce their water consumption in the garden.

Vessel suggested grey water systems, rainwater tanks and a sub surface drip irrigation system. These measures will work to ensure less water is used in the garden. He also suggested using plants which would eventually require no more water than the natural rain fall.

Vessel surveyed the backyard and discussed with the Kings some other ways to create a water wise garden. He suggested replacing lawn areas with decking which would reduce the lawn area and increase useable entertaining space. He also looked using stone over other lawn areas to reduce watering.

In the plan an area beside the house was slated for a large rain water tank and garden beds were made wider and larger, again reducing lawn areas.
