Garden Centre of the Week: Dawson’s Garden World O’Connor

Presenter: Sue McDougall
Episode: 21 (15 September 2007)

Its spring and gardeners get itchy gardening gloves at this time of the year, there’s something about gorgeous spring days that make you want to get out and start planting or pruning. Sue visited Dawson’s Garden World O’Connor and the Garden Gurus club members had many questions they want answered about their favourite plants.

One lady had some sorry looking Flax leaves; Sue suggested that the lady prune them back and in the case of her Kangaroo Paws cut them to ground level after flowering.

Another Club member had a Pride of Madeira which appeared to be dead. Sue assured the lady she was not doing anything wrong, the Pride of Madeira (Echium candicans) is actually quite short lived, only lasting for a few years in many cases.

Another Club Member had a fern affected with leaf nematode damage. As many ferns are susceptible to the damage Sue suggested keep the plants healthy with regular pruning and applications of Seaweed booster.

At the nursery Sue also looked at some fantastic plants.

There’s is one group of plants that have proved themselves time and time again, for hardiness and brilliant spring colour, and that’s the Federation daisies. For a plant to be selected into the Federation Family they need to show strong branching at the base, produce growth that’s compact and tidy, produce masses of flowers and have the self cleaning characteristic. This means you never get the plant looking awful after flowering.

The new release Surf City is a single yellow and has a contrasting darker yellow centre,
Surfer Girl is a semi double bright yellow flower and Supernova is a single pink with a dark cherry centre.

All the Dawson’s Garden World stores have these and the proven varieties of Sugar Cheer, Summer Stars and many more.

Call in to any one of the 4 stores and fill up all those empty pots and bare areas with some bright spring colour.
