Grey Water at the King Family Garden

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 22 (22nd September 2007)

We’re at week three in our water wise garden makeover. In our first two weeks our typical Aussie family has undertaken a water assessment to identify changes they can make around the house and we’ve come up with a concept to re-design the garden. Now the plan is starting to take shape.

With 5 kids the King family do a serious amount of washing, that means a lot of grey water down the drain that could be safely used on the garden so this week we’ve called in Peter Jessup from Everwater to show us how

Interview with Peter Jessup of Everwater Australia

Peter:
“The Grey Mate has been designed so that it accepts the grey water as it leaves the home. The water will come out of your laundry typically, you shower, your vanity basins, flow directly into the unit and what will happen is it will flow in through these pipes and there is a stainless steel scieve to take out the undissolved solids, because you don’t want them flowing out to the garden.
The unit itself needs to be secure from the little ones, so we have some closing hinges at the top which shut it down.”
Mr King:
“Is there any particular laundry detergent we should be using?”
Peter:
“Yeah, typically the liquid soaps are better. The powdered soaps are sold by weight so they typically have high sodium content and that’s what you want to keep out of your garden because that will be one of the elements that will knock off your plants.”
Mrs King:
“Is there a particular website where I can access that information?”
Peter:
“Yes there are a number of websites which you can go to the DSE website which is a government run website, also the save water, as well as all water retailers will typically have those details.”

The good news is your local water retailer will offer you a five hundred dollar rebate on the Grey Mate unit if you get it installed by a licensed plumber. The guys from Shultz plumbing came along to the Kings to install the system.

Mrs King:
“Is it safe to use on any plants?”
Chris:
“You try to steer it away from your veggie patches. Into your general garden area and lawn is best.”
Mrs King:
“Is there a way of shutting the system down?”
Chris:
“Yes, come winter times, it’s a simple case of just turning this valve here and what that does is divert the water straight back into the drain, so that you’re not flooding your backyard.”

Already we’ve shown that small changes can make a substantial savings in water use, but next week the fun really begins because we start to transform our water wise garden.
