Roses: Sue at Dawson’s Garden World
Presenter: Sue McDougall
Episode: 22 (22nd September 2007)
Dawson’s have been growing roses in West Australia for over 100 years. From humble beginnings they now grow the majority of roses on fortuniana rose stock which is ideally suited to WA. Roses are in now for the mass of flowers they do really well year after year without how water at all.
For those starting up a garden it can be daunting when you wander into a garden centre and see all the roses layed out beautifully. Over the next few weeks we are going to showcase some of the best performing varieties that are available at Dawson’s Garden World stores.
Brilliant Pink Iceberg Floribunda Rose (Rosa, Cluster Flowered, ‘Brilliant Pink Iceberg’):
This hardy variety is guaranteed to flower its head off, with all the disease resistance characteristics of its parent plant, the famous Iceberg. It looks brilliant mass planted as a hedge.
Helmut Schmidt Hybrid Tea Rose (Rosa, Large Flowered, ‘Helmut Schmidt’):
If you’re a lover of the traditional rose, the Hybrid Tea variety Helmut Schmidt is your rose. It flowers right through summer and autumn, with strong stems and a neat habit.
Mister Lincoln Hybrid Tea Rose (Rosa, Large Flowered, Mister Lincoln):
If you are after knock out perfume you must plant a few Mister Lincolns. It is a tall grower so it is suited for the back of garden beds. It has huge red flowers which are highly fragrant and the foliage is thick and leathery.
Whilst at Dawson’s Sue also answered a few gardening questions.
“I’m just wondering why my rose is dying back to here?”
All this dead wood needs to be pruned out. It’s called canker and you’ll find it comes because of incorrect pruning. But it’s not the end of the world all you need to do is to trim it back to a really nice strong bud and it will shoot away beautifully. So, any dead wood needs to be removed.
“I have red rose at home and look what’s come from the bottom of it”
That’s fortuniana rootstock and you will find that it will spread everywhere and you won’t get that beautiful big red rose that you were expecting. The fortuniana root stock needs to be cut out and you will find then it won’t shoot away at all.
“I’m not sure what is happening to my roses?”
It’s showing what looks like blind bud and that will never develop into a flowering stem. Roses tend to do this from time to time so all you need to do is trim it back to a really nice strong bud, fertilise it and it will grow beautifully.
