Your Garden Questions Answered
Presenter: Kim Syrus
Episode: 21 (15 September 2007)
Recently Kim was asked by a friend to identify a succulent that produced a yellow, Christmas tree shaped flower. The description was spot on and the plants is an Aeonium, hard to say but easy to grow.
Aeonium are super tough water smart plants. The fleshy leaves form an attractive rosette. The flower spike is produced on mature bushes and is filled with a mass of small, daisy shaped blooms. If you’re into dramatic effects the darker leafed variety Aeonium arboreum var. atropurpureum f. nigrum 'Schwarzkopf', is a beauty.
When it come to adding colour to the yard, succulents are often overlooked, which is a great pity because many of them can give an amazing show of blooms.
Recently a number of concerned Garden Guru club members have had a problem due to water restrictions. Many have purchased click on spray products but, due to various water restrictions, can’t use their hose in the garden. Fortunately this problem can be easily overcome.
Each of these packs is a concentrate that needs to be diluted before being applied; this is done by clicking it onto a hose. However, if you turn the container around and check the back, you’ll see directions for manually mixing these contents. Add this to a watering can and you can now apply the spray, albeit a little differently, any time you like.
Recently Sam at Myponga asked the Gurus a great question “How do you know when a plant needs re-potting?”
Generally the plant will tell you; it doesn’t produce new growth, the foliage looks dull and sometimes it begins to die back. Of course the real test is when you take it out.
If the plant is seriously root bound, the plant needs some attention. Grab a serrated knife and the chopping board and cut through, removing the bottom 2 to 3 centimetres of thickened root before teasing out the new base.
Plants in smaller pots are likely to need re-potting more often. When choosing new pots aim to go up a couple of sizes, for example if you were going from a 175mm pot, skip the 200mm and plant into a 250mm pot.
Use a premium potting mix, put in the plant and back fill then water in using a seaweed booster to get the plant up and growing.
