Garden Centre of the Week: The Greenery

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 22 (22nd September 2007)

If you one of those gardeners that is always flicking through magazines, surfing the net or just having a sticky beak at neighbourhood gardens to get the latest and greatest look. It’s time to save yourself all that trouble and get down to the Greenery in Heidelberg.

One of the frustrations with creating a new garden is waiting for things to grow and establish so you get that softer lived in look. If patience isn’t one of your virtues, then remember big is beautiful. If you’re looking for instant privacy, instant shelter and instant beauty then advanced trees are a good option.

Among the evergreen trees Magnolia ‘St Mary’ is still one of the best. It has big glossy leaves, with attractive rusty undersides.

Michelias are one of the prettiest flowering trees around and they put on a show-stopping display in winter and early spring laden with big white flowers.

Deciduous trees provide shade in summer and let the light shine through in winter which is a big bonus. Flowering Pears boast lovely spring flowers and great autumn foliage. The Manchurian Pear is very special, particularly when smothered in blossom. ‘Chanticleer’ is another top choice; it has a nice upright habit and dark green foliage that turns plum gold in autumn.

Nothing equals the taste of ripe fruit fresh from your own tree. Citrus with their, glossy green leaves, pretty white blossom and a bountiful supply of fruit, have so much going for them lush.

For those gardens lacking space, there is a new range of dwarf grafted citrus, which means they’re reliable, pest and disease resistant and compact making them perfect for pots and containers. Plus they produce full size fruit and you don’t have to restrict yourself to lemons, you can also grow limes and oranges as well. Now you can have your courtyard and eat it too.

Where would our gardens be without Azaleas and Camellias? If you haven’t discovered the virtues of these wonderful plants The Greenery has a huge range of tempting varieties to get you started.

Among the Azaleas you’ll find both sun and shade lovers. Give them slightly acid soil, good drainage and lots of organic matter and they’ll reward you with a magnificent display of colour.

Kurume Azaleas are number one for sheer exuberance, what the flowers lack in size, they make up for in number. Hatsu Giri is stunning in berry shades. Kirin is equally beautiful with tiny musk pink blooms. ‘Christmas Cheer’ is smothered in bright red flowers.

The Japonica Camellias are real show-offs with big amazing blooms. ‘Brushfield’s Yellow’ is about the closest you’ll get to a yellow camellia, with its creamy buttercup blooms. ‘Tip Toe’ stands out with pretty two tone pink flowers. For something dramatic choose ‘Red Velvet’ with its fire engine red flowers.

The Greenery showcases both natural and man-made beauty and is well worth a visit.
