Day 1 - Dillon Garden
Day 1- 28th May 2007
Dillon Garden
Helen Dillon’s garden is a botanical treasure chest situated minutes from Dublin City. Helen has traveled around the world to find many of the plants in her garden and still looks for that special plant that she can add to her collection from cultivars to wild plants. Helen has a flurry of blue coloured flowers in her garden such as Flax (Linum sp.)
Helen’s collections of plants include species roses and an amazing array of cottage stunners including delphiniums and arisiums. There are some absolute treasures in this garden such as White Flowering Kale (Erysimum sp.). A flower that we can all grow back in Australia is the Rhapsody in Blue (Rosa, Modern Rose, ‘Rhapsody in Blue’). Helen has grown this in her garden as a climber and Neville suggests using it as a pillar rose. It has so many flowers and the fragrance is delightful.
Some other plants that took centre stage in the garden include:
Rhodohypoxis (Rhodohypoxis baurii cv.) is a flowering bulb that spreads quickly that is grown in tubs and bowls in springtime.
Ornamental Purple Flowering Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) are not common and this chocolate form is both edible and visually beautiful.
At the back of the garden there are a lot of South American plants but one that sticks out for Neville and Trevor is the Perennial nasturtium (Tropaeolum sp.) as a cascading shrub.
Helen’s garden is full of horticultural treasure and it is well worth a visit as it is full of inspiration. For more information on this garden visit her website linked below.
