Dean shows you some of his favourite house plants for winter. They are going to add a splash of colour and brighten up the indoors for cold months ahead.
Cyclamen ‘White’ Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum cv.) is one of the most popular indoor plants. It is a small low growing ground cover and has great variegated foliage. On top of that it flowers for months on end and the white flowering form looks absolutely stunning.
Cymbidium Orchids (Cymbidium Hybrid) make a great alternative to cut flowers because they last for months and months of end. These are just coming into season now and are available at any good garden centre.
Cymbidium ‘Aunty Lorraine’ Cymbidium Orchid (Cymbidium Hybrid, ‘Aunty Lorraine’) has a lovely soft, yellow Hume and graceful arching leaves.
It won’t hurt to give your indoor plants a little liquid fertiliser along the way. Something like Thrive All Purpose is ideal to give them an extra boost and keep them in great shape. That way they will go on and on flowering, growing and putting a great big smile on your face.
Croton ‘Congo’ (Codiaeum variegatum ‘Congo’) is an indoor plant that is a perfect example of foliage, colour and contrast. It has thick leathery leaves that come in a huge range of colours; orange, red, yellow, green and deep dark black leaves. Put it anywhere indoors and it will brighten things up. It is perfect because it is so hardy and tough.
Dumb Cane (Diffenbachia seguine ‘Tropic Suzanne’) is one of Dean’s favourite indoor plants. It variegated leaf form lifts the room because of its light colour and texture. It doesn’t flower but it is just as good as anything that does especially when grouped on masse.
Indoor plants look great, some are even scented and they help keep the air clean and fresh in our homes. So long as they have some protection from draughts, a little bit of sun and regular (but not excessive) watering they will be doing exactly what they are meant to – look fantastic.
