What to Do
Episode: # 10 09/06/07
Presenter: Melissa King
As a gardener, Melissa likes to think of myself as being pretty green, or as the case may be even a little bit purple, an environmentally friendly kind of person. But making the right choices when it comes to chemical use, water, the types of plants you grow and the products you use can have a big impact on the environment.
That is where the right kind of help comes in very handy. Melissa shows you a group of nurseries that are all about creating Healthy Gardens, Healthy People and a Healthy Environment.
The name says it all. Sustainable Gardening Australia is a not-for-profit organisation devoted to encouraging Australians to garden sustainably. They do this through 'Certified Sustainable Garden Centres' like Bulleen Art and Garden.
Melissa talks to Frances Saunders from Sustainable Gardening Australia.
What is sustainable gardening?
It is gardening to help save the planet, as simple as that!
How easy is it to garden sustainably?
It is really easy to do and that is why SGA was formed to give people advice. We have trained lots of nursery staff as the certified nurseries all have staff that are trained to give information on sustainable gardening practices.
What do we need to be aware of?
Reducing chemical use is a big one, synthetic fertilisers because they can be guilty of causing blue-green algal blooms. Reducing water use is also important which we have all been coming to terms with over the past couple of years and not planting garden plants that are feral in the bush, also called environmental weeds.
Melissa shows you just one example of what you can find at a certified sustainable garden centre. Each product on display has been judged on its environmental impact, so you can select a low impact way to achieve the same results in the garden.
From home-grown produce to home-grown compost, from Indigenous plants to local art – these guys cater for every taste. The compost queen and water wizard even educate the kids. There are over a dozen certified Sustainable nurseries and lots more on the way.
Check out the SGA website for the one closest to you. You can also sign up to get their free monthly email newsletter filled with loads of seasonal, sustainable gardening advice.
