Your Garden Questions Answered
Episode: # 10 09/06/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman
Phil visits the beautiful Mt Tamborine area again to show you another stunning garden, open over the long weekend as part of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme.
Ashby is the private garden of Ellwyn and Neil Paton. They built the charming cottage style home and have surrounded it with a variety of flowering plants that thrive in the cold conditions, with over 90 varieties of camellias in full bloom.
They have a good collection of roses too and although both Neil and Ellwyn are great gardeners they still have to deal with some of the typical rose problems we all experience at some time.
One stem is totally covered with what looks like some kind of terrible fungus. In actual fact it is a type of scale insect commonly called Rose Scale and if you use the back of your thumb nail you will see that they scrape off quite easily. What these insects do is feed on the plants sap and if you don’t keep them under control it will seriously weaken the plant and you won’t get any blooms.
So the question is how can you control them? You can try what Ellwyn does. She gets an old soft toothbrush and some soapy water and gently scrubs them off like that.
Phil has discovered an easier way to control scale and that is with good old Pest Oil.
Just give it a good shake and spray it on all over the stems until it is dripping. It is effective and low toxic and the easy-to-use trigger pack means there is no mixing and no mess.
The oil blocks their breathing pores which causes them to die quick smart but just remember, like any method for controlling scale you will need to follow up two or three times every few weeks to get the numbers down.
Try it out with your roses to keep them performing at their best.
