Your Garden Questions Answered
Episode: # 9 02/06/07
Presenter: Sue McDougall
You can always find something to do in the garden and at the moment it is getting rid of those weeds. Whether you have a small courtyard or a large rambling country garden you will find something to do and garden centres have many ideas and inspiration to keep you going.
The Garden Gurus have invited Garden Club members to Dawson’s Garden World in Joondalup to get ideas and get their gardening questions answered.
One garden club member has a sick looking Dracaena. Sue thinks it has been stressed at some time so the best thing to do is remove all the dead wood. It will start to shoot away so really feed it with some liquid fertiliser once a fortnight.
Another member has a Hen and Chicken Fern (Asplenium bulbiferum) that looks like it has been munched by the caterpillars or slugs and snails at night. Use Baysol Snail Pellet to control the slugs and snails but also if it is caterpillars then use Success.
Backhousia Citriodora or Lemon Myrtle is a Queensland rainforest tree that doesn’t like either the cold or hot weather so the same damage can be cause to the trees in summer and winter. Give it a light trim and really feed it to push it along. You can use the leaves for tea and for flavouring rice as well as making a beautiful tree in the garden.
Another member has a Staghorn (Platycerium Superbum) that he wants to break up. The easiest thing to do is use a sharp knife and cut where ever the individual shield are. You will find you will have quite a bit of root system behind it, so cut that off and pack the back of it on new board with Sphagnum Moss and a little bit of Dynamic Lifter.
As a gardener, Sue dreams of having fantastic roses that she can pick and take inside. Anyone can grow roses in their own garden and Dawson’s have their annual rose sale on now until the end of July. Buy five roses in the same size pot and pay for four. There is no limit to the number you can buy so imagine how gorgeous your garden can look this spring.
Call into Dawson’s Garden World and check out the great range on offer. Dawson’s specialise in roses so you can find some really great unusual varieties. If you are confused then pick up the Dawson’s Rose Catalogue. There is a description inside of every single variety they grow. There is also a handy chart of what to do when, when growing roses.
