Chinese cabbages are some of the most useful vegies to have in the kitchen. They are easy to grow as long as you follow some basic rules.
You can grow your own Chinese cabbages from seed, which means you will be able to plant just a few at a time. Put them into nice rich soil, keep them well watered and feed every couple of weeks with a high nitrogen liquid fertiliser like Thrive Soluble All Purpose. All these things help the plants to grow quickly so they are less likely to flower and go to seed.
Mind you, all is not lost if they do go to seed because the seeds will spread around the garden and pick their own favourite spots to start growing a new generation of Chinese Cabbages.
The other main problems that affect all members of the cabbage family are the caterpillars of cabbage moths and butterflies. These pests eat holes in the leaves. Now the holes are small to start off with but of course they get bigger as the caterpillars grow. The droppings they leave behind aren’t very pleasant, either!
Luckily we now have a really good solution for these pests. It is the naturally-derived caterpillar control called Success. Success gets right into the leaf, so it is waiting there for when the grubs come munching. It is also so gentle that it won an award for green chemistry.
