Sydney Flower Markets

Presenter: Dean Boone

Every year many of us leave it till the last minute to get our flowers for Mother’s Day. So this year Dean thought he would take a behind the scenes look at the Sydney Flower Markets and show you why you need to think ahead and get your order in early.

With hundreds of growers from right across the state, there is a hectic pace at the markets from early in the morning, preparing for the huge rush of flowers wanted and needed by florists for an event like Mothers Day. The lead up is just as busy for them as the day itself and the range of flowers is absolutely mind blowing.

Of course, mum will love you for making an extra effort this year and ordering something really unique, so Dean takes a look at some of the great things you can expect.

Chrysanthemums (Dianthus Hybrid Cultivar, Perpetual Flowering Group.) are always a classic and always a favourite, and at the markets the growers are producing a huge variety of colours, shapes and sizes to make your mum smile.

Fresh flowers that last for weeks and weeks are going to be a definite favourite and they are great value for money.

Figs are in season in autumn and they make a great addition to any bunch of flowers plus your mum can eat them too. The Pepper Berry (Schinus molle) turns a beautiful red in autumn and they make for great fillers in a bunch of flowers.

There is a huge diversity of flowers on offer, take a look at Dahlia’s (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar) for an unusual flower.
They are an old time favourite, that are making a big comeback and they come in every colour except blue!

Of course the question is why should you order ahead? The markets and florists try every year to get everyone the right type and quantity of flowers they want. Now if we all ordered ahead, the local florist would exactly what it we all need and no one would be disappointed.

After seeing the markets Dean suggests to remember to call your local florist to arrange your Mother’s Day flowers.

For more great ideas for mum, why not grab a copy of the Garden Gurus Newspaper. It is available from your local garden centre.

FACT:
The Pepper Berry (Schinus molle) has high risk weed potential and has been classified as a weed in some areas of Australia. If you are thinking about planting one of these trees please contact your local council or local Garden Centre for more information.
