What to Do
Presenter: Phil Dudman
All over Queensland, conditions are perfect for planting colourful flowers and if you head down to your local garden centre you will find a huge array of annuals and perennials that will give you colour from now right into spring.
Petunias (Petunia Hybrid Cultivar) are always reliable and they are great for a quick splash of colour. Some of colour mixes are superb and they don’t need a lot of water either. Dianthus (Dianthus Hybrid Cultivar, Annual Bedding Group) are pretty tough too and they make a terrific table display in a shallow pot in a sunny courtyard.
For something really hardy how about the new Durango Mixed Marigold (Tagetes, Hybrid Cultivar ‘Durango’). They have lovely strong colours and the blooms are extra large.
The 10-pot range from Pohlmans makes planting easy; the plants are already quite established with a good root system so there is more chance your plants will survive. It is economical too, even for some of the more popular perennials.
It is the right time to be planting winter vegetables too and some things to tempt your taste buds from the new Garden Gurus Gourmet Delish Vegetable Range.
Honeysnap Peas are super sweet and extra crunchy you can eat the lot pod and all. Honeysnap is a specially selected stringless variety so they are great for salads and stir-fries. The plants are full of vigour too just plant and stand back.
Cauliflower is great comfort food in winter and this one is a miniature form. The heads grow to about the size of an orange so when you pick them fresh and you eat the lot in one meal there is no loss of flavour and no wastage. Pop in some new plants every four weeks or so and you will enjoy a steady supply.

If you love broccoli, then have a go at these because they’re dead easy to grow. It’s actually a Broccolette, which is a multi-stemmed variety, and it produces masses of long tender shoots. Get em in the ground and you’ll soon be enjoying your own home grown every night of the week. But don’t muck around because now’s the perfect time
By the way… if you want to know more about what to do in the garden… then check out the May issue of the Garden Guru Newspaper out now… it’s loaded with fantastic gardening advice specifically written for Qld … you’ll find it at good garden centres and Mitre 10 stores… so make sure you grab your copy.
