Day 8 Saturday

With this morning being Trevor’s and the crew’s last day in Tasmania, we were a little slower than normal after the premature celebrations of a fantastic trip around the most scenic and diverse of Australia’s states.

Trevor meandered in the crisp (revitalising) morning air down to one of Australia’s premier outdoor markets, Salamanca. This is an amazing array of stalls and stands, where nearly anything is obtainable.

As well, fresh fruit and vegetables, locally grown and organic, are keenly sought after by Hobartians and visitors alike. This is an institution and probably the best patronised outdoor market anywhere! Even if you just like people watching, there is no better place to grab a coffee, sit back and take it all in!

We had heard of a private botanic garden near Margate, 20 minutes south of Hobart that started life as a run down cattle paddock so Trevor and the crew went to investigate.

Inverawe Native Gardens www.inverawe.com.au is a good proponent of water-wise, bird-attracting native gardens, and there is plenty of inspiration to draw on from this garden. Over the 22 acres there have been more 5000 plantings, as well as the naturally regenerating plants and interesting little diversions located throughout.

But this doesn’t detract from the natural scenery, which features the backdrop of North West Bay, as the garden has been designed to compliment the natural landscape.
