Our Itinerary…
Day 7 Friday

All Aboard! for the West Coast Wilderness Railway.

Trevor retraced the pioneering route from Queenstown to Strahan, through some of the most spectacular scenery to rival any railway in Australia. We departed from Queenstown station on board the fully restored carriages, not prepared for the visual extravaganza that would befall us from the comfort of the train.

Ancient rainforests, bridges towering over rivers below, hand built rock terraces and hand carved cuttings will leave you admiring the spirit of the pioneers who forged the link between mine and sea.

Coupled with the history and expert commentary, the journey really is an experience not to be missed! The West Coast Wilderness Railway forms a gateway for visitors to explore Tasmania’s unique rail heritage, discovering the inspiring story of pioneers who built the railway more than 100 years ago. Don’t forget, you can take the journey for yourself from $81 per person.

Taking more modern conveyances we pointed the CRV and Thrifty hire car east and headed for the last stop on our Explore tour, Hobart. Whilst we haven’t exactly been roughing it around the Apple Isle, we were all looking forward to Wrest Point and all it has to offer, including the Birdcage!!!!

Oh, and for a different view of Hobart try The Point Revolving Restaurant which is recognised as one of Tasmania's premier dining restaurants and one that has an enviable reputation. The signature restaurant of Wrest Point, The Point menu offers a delicious collaboration of fresh Tasmanian produce in modern-Australian style cuisine. The revolving seventeenth floor offers 360 degree views of Hobart's majestic waterfront, Mt Wellington and surrounding city-scape - a definite enhancement to the fine dining experience.
Highlights: Flambé cooking at your table

Driving instructions: The drive from Hobart to Strahan takes about five to six hours, allowing a
break at Lake St Clair. Departing Strahan Village, make your way back up the hill and turn right onto the B24 to Queenstown. Drive through Queenstown and follow the A10 back to Hobart. For lunch you may like to stop at the Derwent Bridge Tavern, a Tasmanian traveller’s institution. Pause at Lake St Clair, in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair national park, and take in views in this spectacular region. Also visit The Wall in the Wilderness gallery at Derwent Bridge. Take your time winding through this mountainous stretch of road – some of the wildest country man has ever traversed by car – through the moonscapes and rainforests.
