Our Itinerary…
Day 5 Wednesday

Sending Neville off to the airport to return to Perth, we continued exploring with Melissa. Our first stop was a revelation. Culzean’s gardens (pronounced Cullane) were established in the 1840’s, and some of the gems Melissa discovered included a massive Californian redwood, a gorgeous catalpa, fantastic English style parkland and a massive 3 acre landscaped lake surrounded by thousands of water loving plants and wildlife such as platypus and ducks.

There is always something to see, no matter what the season. Whether it is autumn colours, spring flowering bulbs, rhododendrons and azaleas, roses or evergreen mature trees, Culzean is a fantastic place to wonder and ponder. Open by appointment (and it is well worth making one!) please phone 03 6393 2648

On on...

After lunch we scooted beneath the Western Tiers to Mole Creek, and we arrived at an incredible feat of gardening. From a grazing paddock to a desirable garden in 7 years, Karen and Peter have created a piece of heaven in Mole Creek. Wychwood Garden and Nursery should be on every garden lover’s itinerary.

Melissa was amazed at the amount of colour and use of unusual plants. Everywhere you turn, there was something else to feast your eyes on.

The garden is bordered by the beautiful Mole Creek, quietly gurgling along the northeast boundary, and if you are quiet and patient, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the resident platypus.

Open Thurs - Sat 10am - 5pm and other times by appointment. Closed Winter (June, July & August). Phone: 03 6363 1210

Sadly we had to leave the enchanting Wychwood and Melissa behind as we made our way up to Cradle Mountain Chateau for the night. Melissa was returning to Melbourne and Trevor took her place, making the trip from Launceston to Cradle Mountain Chateau in the evening.
