Fertilising Trees

Episode: #5 21/04/07
Presenter: Judy Horton

When you are fertilising your garden it is easy to overlook the established trees but they need feeding just as much as any other plant.

The trouble is, if the tree is growing in a lawn then the grass will try to gobble up all the nutrients before they have a chance to get down to the tree’s roots. This means that when you spread fertiliser around all you will end up with is greener grass but there will be nothing in it for the tree.

Judy has a good way to get around this problem.

Starting at the drip-line, this is beneath the outer edge of the leaf canopy, make holes that are about one metre apart. You can do that by pushing down with a tool (but you have to be strong) or by hammering in something like a piece of metal pipe.

Make a circle of holes right around the tree and then come in a metre and make another circle. If it is a big tree you can continue making circles, finishing about one metre from the trunk. Then put a good handful of Dynamic Lifter pellets into each hole. Water well, or wait for rain. The great thing about Dynamic Lifter pellets is that they are so gentle they won’t burn the roots even if it is dry at the time you spread them.

How often should you fertilise your established trees? It is a good idea to do it at least twice a year, once in spring and then again in autumn.
