Lettuce Seed
Episode: #4 14/04/07
Presenter: Judy Horton
The best way to grow your own lettuce is to sow a few seeds every couple of weeks. That way you will always have fresh young plants to pick for your salads but because they don’t like to be too hot, or be sown too deeply, lettuce seeds can be a bit tricky to germinate.
First, fill a pot with some seed raising mix and water it well. After the excess water has drained away, sprinkle the lettuce seeds on the top. Remember, don’t bury them, just press them gently into the mix. You will have to water again but a really good tip is if the weather is warm, use cold water from the fridge – it will cool the seeds right down.
The seeds are sitting right on top of the mix so they can be easily washed away; it is best to water them by spraying with a gentle mist, or by sitting the pot in a container of water until the moisture comes through to the top.
Allow the pot to drain again, then cover it with some plastic wrap and keep it somewhere cool and shady. If it is really hot you can even put it into the fridge for the first night. Water again whenever it is dry and within a couple of weeks you will start to see little baby lettuce plants. Help them to grow quickly by feeding them every week with half strength Thrive Soluble Plant Food.
