Delish veggies

Episode: #4 14/04/07
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

This weekend you should be setting your veggie garden up for autumn and early winter crops. Of course growing your own at home is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Its also one of the most nutritious ways you add the tastiest fresh produce to the Kitchen table

First, after a long hot summer you need to add a good organic humus into the soil. Animal manures are great and one of the best is chicken manure. The trouble with it is it can vary greatly in strength. In fact it can cook your favourite plants overnight if you get it raw.

That is why you should only get something that is guaranteed in its quality like dynamic lifter which is
Australia’s favourite organic plant food. It has been fully composted, heat sterilized and then had trace elements added into the blend before being hammered into easily handled pellets.

This means you can confidently apply it all over the garden without fear of over doing it or maybe not applying enough. This is absolutely critical when it comes to growing seedlings and another important factor is adding organic matter that will hold both nutrients and moisture.

Apply it a rate of around 100 grams per square metre and hoe it into the ground soak it and leave it for a few days to soak in. It is also important to add a wetting agent at this point because it ensures water soaks evenly into the ground.

The veggies you use are up to your personal taste preference. Our collection of guru seedlings have proven to be incredibly popular and the autumn varieties you should be planting now include Baby Butter Lettuce, Mt. Etna Salad White Onion, Redback Spring Onion, Gourmet Baby Mini Cauliflower, Cabbage and Branching Broccolette.

After you have planted out your seedlings it is critical you keep moisture levels in the soil consistent. Drying out and soaking is not an option as you will lose them if you work on this system. It means you have to water morning and night for a week after then daily for two weeks after planting. After that a daily water in hot conditions is a good idea although make sure you use autumn rains.
