Bunjae Artpia
Episode:
Presenter: Neville Passmore, Trevor Cochrane
Neville visits the subtropical Jeju Island, on the southern tip of the peninsula to take a look at one of the world?s horticultural wonders, Bunjae Artpia, literally Bonsai utopia.
For Neville, the real story is about the creator and director, Mr Bum-Young Sung, a humble farmer?s son, who took his dream to create a beautiful garden for the people and carved it from a rocky waste land.
Mr Bum-Young Sung fell in love with trees and learnt the art of Bonsai after many, many mistakes of trying to learn.
There are many beautiful rocks in the garden which mostly come from Jeju Island but more stones from the mainland also had to be shipped to the Island.
It is an outstanding garden on a world stage.
The garden is extensive, covering over 9 acres of what was once baron earth. Today, it is home to over 2000 Bunjae, some are even hundreds of years old. They vary dramatically from native pine species to fruit such as persimmons, crab apples, nashi?s and quince.
The garden is an inspiration as well as an educational experience with the plants being identified in several languages. There is also comprehensive information on caring for and growing Bunjae.
A major highlight is the tremendous insight gained from the philosophical writings positioned throughout the garden. This not only helps you understand the reasons behind creating bunjae but it helps you understand the profound wisdom in its creation.
