Yates Ferns
Episode: New Zealand? Bay of Plenty
Presenter: Neville
Passmore
New Zealand has an enviable of native ferns including the silver tree fern, the national floral symbol. Ferns were one of the first plants to appear on the planet and they are great around the house because they bring cool lush greenery to indoor locations as well as heavily shaded areas. One of the characteristics is that they have crook roots. This means they find it very difficult if the soil dries out to get more moisture up into the rest of the plant. That is why they need to be kept moist all the time. That is why you will need to choose a potting mix that holds onto the moisture well such as Yates Thrive Premium Potting Mix that also contains a wetting agent.
Ferns have got many lovely forms and many of them trail over the edge of a pot and that makes them ideal specimens to grow in Yates Hanging Baskets. They would look fantastic festooned around any outdoor living area that will bring that lovely touch of greenery.
Interesting Fact:
Ferns existed on the earth about 100 million years before the first flowering plants evolved.
