'Mauao' Summit (Mount Maunganui) & Hot Salt Water Pools

Episode: New Zealand? Bay of Plenty
Presenter: Neville Passmore

Mount Maunganui is one of the most visited look out spots in the area and the only way to the top is walking or jogging and every day there is many that take the hike.

The million dollar 360 degree views are shared by a flock of sheep; council employees that keep the grass down.

The mountain hasn?t always been in the particular location, according to Maori legend it used to be located some distance away in the cluster of mountains you can see on the horizon. No NameMountain, as it was called, fell in love with Mount Pūwhenua and she in turn was in love with Mount Otanewainuku, that was out to the east.

Mount Otanewainuku wasn?t too thrilled with the competition so he organised for the forest fairies to tow No Name out to sea. It didn?t quite work because when dawn broke, the fairies, who were afraid of the light, fled and let go of their vines. The mountain was abandoned exactly where it remains to this day.

After a trek to the top there is nothing like bathing in a thermal pool at the base of the mountain. A heat transfer from a hot mountain stream warms the salty sea water. The pool is much visited by arthritis sufferers and is pure heaven for weary limbs.
