Bukashi Kitchen Composter and Delish Recipe

Episode:#11 11/11/06
Presenter:
Phil Dudman

Phil checks out some of the scrumptious looking recipes in the Garden Gurus Delish book and decides to road test one at the Botanix caf? with master chef Scott Johnson.

The recipe made, Green Papaya Salad is available in Delish ? From Garden to Table.

Phil also shows you a clean and tidy way to deal with all your kitchen waste.

This is the revolutionary Bukashi Kitchen Composter from Enviropower Australia. Any food waste goes in, even those pesky prawn shells, which we know can be a real problem in the Queensland heat. In this system, they won?t smell.

The Bukashi is basically a mixed culture of beneficial micro-organisms found naturally. At the end of the day, all you do is compress the waste, sprinkle a thin layer of Bukashi over the top and seal the bin.

Straight away, the micro-organisms get to work and in effect what they do is pickle and preserves all of the food waste. That means, the food won?t rot and that is why you don?t get any smell in your kitchen.

The great thing is, when the process is finished it breaks down very quickly in your garden and your plants just love it.
