Wormswork Technologies
Episode: #10 4/11/06
Presenter: Kim Syrus
One of the signs of a healthy garden is lots and lots of earthworms. They loosen the ground, allowing air and water to really penetrate. Worms feed on organic matter and importantly produce nutrient rich castings that are like gold to any garden. Kim has been on the lookout for different ways of adding this worm gold to your soil.
We all know that worm farms are great at turning food scraps into fantastic rich compost and even better nutrient rich water. This is simply magic on the garden, helping to condition the soil and stimulate plant growth. But what you get out of one farm doesn?t seem to go very far.
Wormswork Technologies, a fully owned Australian company has a unique worm farm in Millicent. It uses a huge range of locally sourced green waste and natural by-products to produce an amazing 5000 tonnes of worm compost and a staggering 2 million litres of worm water every year.
The odourless, pet safe compost is a rich, natural soil conditioner that stimulates important microbes in your ground and really improves soil structure. While the liquid, in bottles, is a fantastic plant growth stimulant. Now, there are a number of ways both can be used.
If you have existing garden beds, spread the worm compost around your plants and turn in. If you are preparing a new garden area, apply evenly over the ground. For clay soils, a little gypsum added in will also help open up the ground and make it better draining, now dig in.
The natural soil conditioner is also great at planting time and it is safe to use on all types of plants. If you are establishing a new rose garden then add 2 handfuls to each hole before placing your plant in the ground. Backfill and then water in well. Your new roses will quickly develop a strong root system and get off to a flying start.
Applying the liquid as a foliar spray to plants like climbing roses is simple. Spray evenly over the foliage, it is best in the morning but avoid hot days over 30 degrees. The spray is absorbed by the plant helping to strengthen it, and giving a high degree of disease resistance.
What a brilliant way of using worms to create a real solution to the problem of waste. Wormswork products will both condition and energise your garden. Remember, if we take good care of our soil, it will take good care of us.
