Lawn Preparation

Episode: WA Garden Gurus Special - Summer Gardens
Presenter: Neville Passmore

One of the real lessons we have learned from 6 years of water restrictions here in the West is that a key to waterwise lawn performance is soil preparation before planting.

Neville takes a look at a back yard is about to be replanted with a warm climate grass and the soil is being bolstered with a brand new material that has some pretty amazing properties.

Moisture Worx Turf is based on fine ash a by product of electricity production from coal. There are real environmental payoffs in putting this carbon back into the soil.

When added to sand it fills in the gaps between the particles helping to slow the movement of moisture through the soil. It also holds many times its own weight in water and acts as a chemical magnet for fertilisers helping them to work longer

Moisture Worx Turf needs to be applied at high rates of about 2.5 kilograms per square metre which means a 25kg bag covers ten square metres. It is a fine dust so avoid windy days or wet it down quickly, then mix it into the soil

It is an organic carbon based form of humus and has a long term positive effect on soil fertility. You can expect to reduce the water consumption of any type of lawn by up to 40% when it is applied prior to planting. Plus the ash contains a number of vital trace elements for our depleted soils.

All of this means you finish up with healthier grass and a reduced cost of maintenance. Moisture Worxs Turf is produced in WA is available from leading turf growers and laying contractors.
