Swanes Lawn

Episode: #7 14/10/2006
Presenter: Dean Boone

A perfect green lawn is a great past time in Australian garden culture, and it is achievable if you understand the needs of your lawn and the maintenance required. A less is more philosophy would be the approach to advocate and knowing when to have lawn, and when to have garden, is the key to success in a great garden design.

By now we are all water wise gardeners and we are beginning to understand how to work in with the water restrictions. By simply working with the natural environment in and around the home we make our job as gardeners a whole lot easier.

A fresh green lawn, like the one at Swanes Nursery in Dural, can not only look great but it also serves other purposes. A lawn controls dust, cools the earth and minimises heat reflection. It also has a calming effect to the eye. Every landscape project is complete when that final blanket of green goes down.

A well defined lawn, bordered with your favourite plants is better than a lawn that simply fills space. Take a look in your own backyard and see where the lawn grows best. Keep the lawn in this location then fill the rest in with layers of hardy shrubbery. You?ll find your garden actually looks bigger, and the whole backyard becomes easier to maintain.

Have you ever considered lawn alternatives? Some gardens are just not suited to traditional lawns because of limited water, heavy shade or impossible access for a mower. You can still achieve that same soothing green carpet by using some great low growing plants, like the ones available at Swanes.

Lawn Chamomile, Creeping Thyme and Mondo Grass are planting alternatives when you can?t grow a lawn. They are all very hardy and can be planted en-mass to achieve a similar result. You will find they can take a little more work to establish, but once they get underway you will never look back.

Lawns can be water hungry and choosing the right lawn type will get you half way to a water wise garden. The other solution can sometimes be about thinking outside the square. We all love a great lawn and love the smell of fresh cut grass but not many of us love mowing in the hot summer sun, so plan ahead for best results in your garden.

Swanes are famous for their roses and now also for their lavender farm. The gardens are thriving and Swanes will be holding their Rose Spectacular from Saturday 21st of October to Sunday 29th of October. They are also a great location to come for the day with a picnic rug and lounge on the beautiful green lawn.
