Your Questions Answered
Episode: #5 30/09/2006
Presenter: Kim Syrus
1. If you are planting up your veggie patch then Kim has some advice on what type of fertilizer will give your seedlings the best start.
Start off with a good dose of an organic feed like Dynamic Lifter scattered about. The pellets will breakdown slowly to gradually release nutrients to the plants and improve the soil.
At the same time, your seedlings will also need an instant boost. A soluble fertilizer like Thrive Soluble All Purpose will deliver a good balance of nutrients and trace elements directly to the roots and leaves. The easy to use powder dissolves instantly in water. Pour into a watering can and sprinkle over your seedlings for rapid results.
With regular feeds, the Baby Butter Lettuces and Redback Spring Onions will be ready to harvest in no time.
With new shoots and leaves beginning to cover the roses, colourful blooms are only weeks away. So now is the time to keep a sharp eye out for any fungal diseases.
If you are looking at a no mess approach to dealing with fungal problems, then Yates Ready to Use spray is just the answer. Containing a systemic fungicide, apply directly to the leaves. The spray is absorbed by the plant and travels around, immunising it against many fungal problems including blackspot, powdery mildew and rust. It is not just roses that will benefit; this spray can be used on a wide variety of ornamental plants as well.
The easy to use spray is ideal for those in the smaller garden, or, even in the larger garden when a quick fix is needed.
2. In order to keep your plants flowering longer, trim off with snips or just by hand. By pinching out the older blooms you will encourage the plant to put its energy into making new growth and new flowers, instead of keeping the old fading blooms alive.
A plant needs lots of energy to bloom. So to keep your plants in great flowering shape, it is vital to keep them well feed. Choose a fertilizer with a higher ratio of Potassium to Nitrogen. Potassium encourages blooming and also strengthens the plant as well.
Concentrated balanced fertilizer, like Thrive Flower and Fruit is ideal. Measure out, mix and water in, to give your plants a super flowering boost. Then apply the fertilizer regularly to promote continuous brilliant blooms.
